Ballet San Antonio presents an evening of dance in Travis Park

Ballet San Antonio will present the third season of “Ballet in the Park” in downtown San Antonio’s Travis Park on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 6 till 8 p.m. This is one of our most historic parks, a gathering place since 1870.

UPDATE: This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 11 but was rescheduled due to the threat of thunderstorms in the area.

The evening will begin with a rehearsal studio-style warm up class with the dancers and a discussion led by Artistic Director, Willy Shives. The company just brought their 2016-17 season at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts to a close with a very well received production of the classic “Sleeping Beauty,” and this is a great opportunity to get to know the company up close and personal – for free!

Shives has accomplished quite a lot in his first full season with the company after a long and fruitful career as a dancer himself. His last post before landing in San Antonio was with the world-renowned Joffrey Ballet. This native Texan, hailing from the valley, has an easygoing style that makes getting to know the art of ballet fun and entertaining.

After the Q&A session, the audience will be treated to a performance beginning at 7 p.m. featuring excerpts from the repertory. This is a family-friendly event and is an excellent opportunity to introduce all ages to the art of ballet before deciding on a splurge for season tickets for the 2017-2018 season (TBA). Be sure to bring your blankets and lawn chairs, ready to settle in for what promises to be a beautiful evening in the park.

In other news, if you are in the mood for a road trip, you can also see the company perform at the McAllen Performing Arts Center on March 17 at 7:30 p.m. They will be performing as a guest of the Rio Grande Valley Ballet. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

Travis Park is located at 311 East Travis Street, 78205. You can try your luck with on-street parking and open lots, but if you are less familiar with downtown, there are also options to pre-plan at sanantonioparking.spplus.com. Learn more about Travis Park and their events here.
