Join in the Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebrations

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mexico's independence during Diez y Seis celebrations across the San Antonio during September through November.
 
This year's celebration features a wide variety of events held at various locations across the city.
 
Diez y Seis de Septiembre, the 16th of September, commemorates the beginning of Mexico's battle for independence from Spain. On Sept. 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo de Costilla led the first revolutionary forces against the Spaniards.
 
A national Mexican holiday, Diez y Seis de Septiembre has been celebrated since 1825.

Three exhibitions in the ICM Galleries. Josephine Sacabo, Oyeme Con Los Ojos; Josefina Niggli, Halfway Child; and Slanted Glances: Idiosyncratic Interpretations Of Independence And Revolution In Mexico, a curated exhibit of 12 photographers from Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

No Escape: Photographs of the Brothers Montiel Klint
San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones Ave.
Based in Mexico City, the Montiel Klint brothers produce large scale color photographs of staged scenarios with provocative narrative content. Gerardo’s photographs of outdoor surroundings featuring lone figures reflect his quest for spiritual knowledge. Fernando’s images of dense cluttered environments are viewed by the artist as fragments of an insensitive society constantly bombarded by popular media.

A dance performance celebrating Diez y Seis and Hispanic Heritage Month.This performance is also one in a series of events celebrating 75 years of dance that began in 1934 by Berta Almaguer, the founder of the Parks and Recreation Department’s dance program. Performers include students of the program as well as Fandango pre-professional dance troupe.

The Civic ceremony of 200th Anniversary of the Mexican Independence will be led by the Consul General of Mexico.

1910 - A Revolution Across Borders

The Witte Museum’s exhibition commemorates the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution, the pivotal political conflict that shaped our understanding of Mexico as a nation, and the cultural history of South Texas.

29th Annual Avenida Guadalupe Association’s 16 de Septiembre Parade and Festival
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Plaza Guadalupe, South Brazos and Guadalupe streets
This all day family celebration begins with Drill Team competition at 8 a.m. and parade at 10 a.m. Grand Marshal to be announced. Limited seating is provided; bring your own chairs. Festival continues after parade with food booths and live entertainment. Free kid’s area, with games, face painting, rides and moonwalk 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center "Viva Mi Cultura"
3 p.m., Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 1300 Guadalupe St.
A lecture demonstration featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company presenting traditional dances, costumes and music of Mexico. The lively performance gives audiences the opportunity to interact with the dancers while emphasizing the cultural value of traditional Mexican dance. Audience members are invited to participate in a question and answer session and to join the dancers on stage.

International Youth Basketball Tournament and Festival del los Ninos

The entire family can enjoy a basketball tournament with youth ages 7 to 15, as well as a health fair and rides.
 
 
Saturday, Sept. 25
Sonus Quartet Concert: A Journey through Mexican Classical and Contemporary Music
7 p.m., Mexican Cultural Institute Auditorium, 600 Hemisfair Park
Based in Querétaro, México, Sonus was founded in 1998 by Luis Obregon, Claudia Ramirez, Guillermo Villalobos and Valery Sekretov. Sonus members come from great music schools in London, Russia, the United States and Mexico. The program will include Mexican music by composers Maria Grever, Juventino Rosas, Manuel Ponce, Belisario García, Salvador Morlet, Macedonio Alcala and Ruben Fuentes.

Mariachi Festival and Fashion Show

5 p.m., Arneson River Theater, La Villita Historic Arts Village
Families can enjoy a free concert featuring middle and high school mariachi groups from local schools and a fashion show with regional costumes.

Revolucion into the Third Century

The Erison Dancers will perform the world premiere of Erica Wilson-Perkins evening length production of Revolucion into the Third Century. The modern dance work examines the Mexican Revolution of 1910 and beyond and will feature the live vocals of Azul and costumes of Martin Sanchez. The performance will also feature the Parks and Recreation Department Alamotion and Fandango dance troupes.
