Sneak Peek: Phil Hardberger Park

The park, located at 13203 Blanco Road, is on land purchased by the City of San Antonio in 2006 and 2007. The park's namesake, former Mayor Phil Hardberger, supported developing the area on themes of education, sustainability and ecology.
Grand opening festivities are scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 16.
No parking will be allowed inside the park during the grand opening, and visitors should park at Winston Churchill High School (map) or Alon Shopping Center. A shuttle will be provided. Dogs on leashes are welcome.
Park visitors will be able to use multiple picnic areas, playground, dog park partitioned for large or small dogs, walk the mile and a half of shaded trails and view the oak savanna restoration.
According to a release by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, the second phase of the park, to be completed in 2011, will include:
- Salado Creek Outdoor Classroom Pavilion, trailhead, greenway connection and overlook
- Northwest Military Highway entrance
- Park road and additional parking
- One-mile loop trail and outdoor education area
- Multipurpose play field
- 2.7 acre oak savanna restoration.
