San Antonio Area Foundation announces grant awards to area nonprofits
The San Antonio Area Foundation is pleased to announce the results of the competitive grant distribution process awarding a total of $984,858 with 79 awards to 76 nonprofit organizations serving Bexar County and surrounding counties.
Funded by permanent funds and trusts, honoring the donors’ wishes for the betterment of the community is the guiding principle behind the San Antonio Area Foundation’s annual competitive grant distribution process. Grants from Area Foundation donor-advised trusts and funds are made throughout the year, based on donor recommendations.
The past few years have been difficult for area nonprofits. Donations have slowed, while many needs in the city’s population have increased. By offering the opportunity for area agencies to apply for grants in a broad range of categories, the Area Foundation supports a variety of programs. Grants help fund programs which assist individuals and families of all ages with education, health and well-being, enrich the culture of San Antonio citizens, support animal welfare and help fund biomedical research.
“The Area Foundation volunteer committees reviewed 314 grant applications this year requesting $7.2 million,” said Grants Program Officer Lydia Saldaña. “Before making their final recommendation, members spend many hours evaluating the applications according to criteria such as the soundness of the program, strength of the budget, uniqueness of the project and how it will benefit the community.
“The Area Foundation is proud to serve our community’s varied needs by awarding grants through the annual competitive process in so many different categories,” stated Clarence R. “Reggie” Williams, President and CEO. “As we continue to be more strategic in the focus of our grantmaking, we will soon offer grants for strengthening nonprofits and high school completion, specifically for out-of-time school programs serving students from 6-9th grades.”
2011 Grant Categories and totals are as listed:
- Animal Services $300,139
- Arts and Culture $116,414
- Biomedical Research $100,522
- Community Human Services $218,384
- Medicine and Healthcare $249,399
