NOWCastSA earns praise from Poynter and the Aspen Institute

NOWCastSA is being hailed as a national model by the respected journalism organization, Poynter, and NOWCastSA’s partnership with San Antonio Public Library was cited as a “Best Idea of the Day” by the Aspen Institute.

The praise comes as NOWCastSA is stretching to meet a challenge grant from News Match that will double donations to the independent nonprofit news organization through Dec. 31, 2017. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, a longtime supporter of the San Antonio Public Library and of NOWCastSA, congratulated NOWCastSA Executive Director Charlotte-Anne Lucas on the recognitions from Poynter and the Aspen Institute.

In its article, “Welcome to your Local Library Which Also Happens to be a Newsroom," Poynter noted that NOWCastSA’s newsroom and studio are in San Antonio’s Central Library. NOWCastSA pays “rent” by recording and webcasting events at the library, such as the recent opening of the Library's Latino Collection.

San Antonio Library Director Ramiro Salazar calls the relationship “a perfect fit,” for both entities. “It’s about empowering the community with information, enlightening the community with knowledge, so that members of our community can make their decisions, smart decisions, for themselves,” he said in this video.

The Poynter article said the “partnership may provide a model as journalists and libraries find common cause and look for deeper ways to collaborate.”

The Aspen Institute, a nonprofit think-tank and forum for the exchange of ideas responded to the Poynter article by selecting NOWCastSA and the San Antonio Public Library as a “Best Idea of the Day” on Dec. 11.

NOWCastSA was founded in 2009 under a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, on the premise that information is a core community need.

In 2017, NOWCastSA was chosen to be part of News Match, a national campaign by the Knight Foundation, the Democracy Fund and the MacArthur Foundation to support and strengthen independent local news organizations. News Match will double any gift you make to NOWCastSA through Dec. 31, 2017 — up to $1,000.
