Video: Student-Led 'Paws for a Cause' raises awareness about homelessness

The link between people who are experiencing homelessness and their animals inspired the student-led art exhibition and fundraiser, Paws for the Cause.

Advanced Learning Academy students, in grades 6-10, studied the issues addressed by two, local nonprofit organizations, Animal Defense League and Haven for Hope. The students then reflected on what they learned and demonstrated their newfound knowledge through the creation of mixed-media artwork.

This art will be on display at Paws for the Cause, and the students will be available to discuss their motivations to create their pieces. Although the art will not be for sale, the students plan to create a calendar or book featuring the work, which will be offered for sale in the future to continue to generate proceeds for both causes.

The students represent two groups at Advanced Learning Academy: members of a community-service class who were interested in a project focused on animals and members of the Team Up Challenge Club, who were studying homelessness. The relationship between the issues intrigued the students, and they decided to collaborate to produce this completely student-led event and to create awareness around this connection.

The Animal Defense League and Haven for Hope already partner on this effort, and representatives from each organization will be available to discuss their joint energies at the event.
