This annual institute offers families, school district personnel and community groups from across Texas the opportunity to network, obtain resources and information, and receive training and bilingual materials on IDRA’s nationally-recognized research-based model for parent leadership in education. This institute is interactive and participatory. All presentations are bilingual (English-Spanish).

Parents and students give testimony about a program that helps both middle school and elementary students by placing the older ones to become tutors of the younger ones.

The Comunitario PTA model is an innovative approach to school-family-community collaboration. A comunitario PTA is a parent group that is based in a community-based organization, rather than in a single school. And their sole purpose is to collaborate with schools to improve the success of students.

El PTA Comunitario modela una nueva forma de facilitar la colaboración entre la familia, la escuela, y la comunidad. Los Comunitario PTAs son grupos de padres de familia que están afiliados con la organización del PTA estatal, pero están establecidos dentro de las organizaciones comunitarias en lugar de en una escuela. Su único propósito es colaborar con las escuelas para mejorar el éxito de los estudiantes.

11:30 a.m. Session C / Sesión C: Mesa Comunitaria - Family Leadership Projects

The PTA Comunitarios and other organizations in the lower Rio Grande Valley surveyed more than 1,600 parents about Texas’ new graduation requirements, reported on it and are now conducting new activities to inform the community and to work with their schools to ensure children are on the path to college.

Los PTA Comunitarios y otras organizaciones en el valle del Río Grande encuestaron más de 1.600 padres sobre los nuevos requisitos de graduación de Texas; informaron sobre ella y ahora están llevando a cabo nuevas actividades para informar a la comunidad y trabajar con sus escuelas para asegurar que los niños están en el camino a la Universidad.
