SAN ANTONIO (August 2, 2011) – Hispanics, who make up 60 percent of Bexar County’s population and almost 40 percent of Texas’, face special cancer risks.Minimizing those risks is the subject of a free public lecture to be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

A group of students at UTSA have produced a documentary focusing on sex trafficking of minors in San Antonio and will be screening it for the public early next month.The documentary, "Behind Closed Doors: Voices from the Inside," exposes viewers to child prostitution in San Antonio and tells the personal stories of those affected by it. The film was produced by students of UTSA's Advanced Policy Class in the Department of Social Work, according to a news release.

Avenida Guadalupe Association (Avenida) President/CEO J. Oscar Ramirez has been selected to speak on July 25 on a panel at the upcoming National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Annual Conference in Washington, DC where President Barack Obama will offer a keynote address. Mr. Ramirez currently acts as one of two Texas Affiliate Council members, and the panel discussion next week will cover the affiliates’ role in expanding Latino engagement and participation in the 2012 elections.
