¡Tiendita Por Vida! Healthy Selections Program for Corner Stores launch
Information from press release:
Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities, a Metro Health program, will inaugurate its first two Tiendita Por Vida convenience stores this Saturday, Nov. 12.
- M&I Meat Market, 5106 W. Commerce, 9-11 a.m.
- Family Market, 1424 Guadalupe Street, 1-3 p.m.
M&I Meat Market and Family Market joined the ¡Tiendita Por Vida! program to offer area residents an easy and accessible way to purchase healthier food choices and keep the neighborhood from being a ‘food desert’ with no access to fresh or frozen produce within walking distance. Two locations will celebrate their participation in the program. Healthy cooking demos and samples will be available during the events.
What is a ¡Tiendita Por Vida! convenience store?
The ¡Tiendita Por Vida! initiative installed refrigeration and freezer units in two family-owned stores in the 78207 and 78237 zip codes, often referred to as “food deserts” for the lack of healthy food products. The units are funded through the Communities Putting Prevention to Work federal grant. The stores will stock the units with fresh and frozen foods, and feature culturally-relevant marketing and education, including healthy recipes and cooking demonstrations.
