All School Exhibition 2011
Southwest School of Art’s diverse students, faculty and allied artists will present outstanding recent work in the art school’s annual All School Exhibition. Each year, works which are selected show the wide range of contemporary art – from classical to experimental, from representational to abstract, from functional to non-functional, and from personal to political.
This year, the works will be selected by the art school’s department chairs, who will each exhibit one piece of theirs as well.
The All School Exhibition is an opportunity for the school to recognize a distinguished member of the faculty with its annual Award for Teaching, as well as to present awards for outstanding student work, including a “Best of Show” award.
The exhibition opens with a free, public reception on Thursday, June 2, from 5:30 -7:30, in the Russell Hill Rogers Gallery, Navarro Campus, Navarro and Augusta streets, downtown San Antonio.
Also opening at the art school on Thursday June 2 will be a solo exhibition of unique works by San Antonio painter Michelle Belto, entitled Uncommon Elements. Belto will give a talk, including an encaustic wax demonstration, that will be free and open to the public on Saturday, June 18, from 2 p.m. – 4p.m.
The art school’s teen studio intensive painting program, “Bee Nation,” is also exhibiting works inspired by the music and culture of The Beatles, in a show they named Striped Apple. Also in the Navarro Lobby Gallery will be porcelain organic pieces by Cecilia Castro Hancock, who recently completed certificate studies at the art school.
The All School Exhibition 2011, Striped Apple, and Uncommon Elements remain on display through August 14 and are open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the All School Exhibition is additionally open on Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Like all exhibitions at the art school, these are free and open to the public.
