"KUU" at Unit B Gallery
The opening reception of KUU, a group exhibition featuring recent works by Estonian artists, Juri Ojaver, Jaan Paavle, Paul Rodgers, and Jaan Toomik (organized by Riley Robinson of San Antonio) will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at Unit B Gallery, 500 Stieren at Cedar Street.
According to Unit B Gallery,
Since its independence, Estonia has been through an extraordinary number of changes. Political, social, economic and cultural changes have all taken place in such a short period of time. From the euphoric, optimism of the early 90’s to the recent world economic crash, which taught everyone some hard lessons, Estonians have experienced real change to all aspects of life.
The four artists working primarily in video and sculpture, have all in some way made observations on the change (or sometimes lack of change) to the Estonian psyche and society during recent years. They have in common a dry sense of humor and sometimes self irony in their observations. Periodically coming together to exhibit together under the group name “Eesti energian,” they have found common ground and interest though their personal backgrounds are very different. The recent death of Jaan Paavle has created a shift not just in the lives of the other artists but in the cultural world of their small country. It is a great pity he didn’t get to America for he certainly would have had something to say.
