The City of San Antonio’s Office of Sustainability and the San Antonio Police Department are partnering with the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization to raise awareness about the importance of bicycle safety and cyclists’ responsibility to use proper illumination when riding a bicycle between dusk and dawn.

The Office of Sustainability’s “San Antonio Bikes” program supports cycling for transportation and will hand out 300 bike light sets to cyclists without lights during First Friday, September 6, in Southtown. Representatives will be available to answer questions and assist cyclists with installing the bike lights on their bicycles. Representatives will also encourage pedestrians to use lights for safety when they are walking busy streets.

Using bike lights at night is both a state and local law. Bicyclists and motorists have the same rights, same rules, and same responsibilities and are encouraged to share the road. Be safe and be friendly.
