St. Mary's University Neighborhood Walk

Stroll through the campus, the surrounding neighborhood, and around Woodlawn Lake.

On Saturday, Jan. 26 the St. Mary's University Neighborhood Revitalization Project is co-sponsoring a non-competitive walk (a "Volksmarch") that will begin and end at the University Center atrium on the St. Mary's University campus. Participants will walk through the University campus and on local neighborhood streets to Woodlawn Lake. The route will take walkers around Woodlawn Lake and back to the campus. The complete route will be 10KM. A shorter 5KM route will be available.

A volksmarch is a non-competitive walk that can be completed at the walker's own leisure (see www.ava.org for more information). Participants may begin at any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The University Center atrium will serve as the start and finish point for this annual event. Participants will walk through the University campus and on local neighborhood streets to Woodlawn Lake. The route will take walkers around Woodlawn Lake and back to the campus. The complete route will be 10KM. A shorter 5KM route will be available. Participation fee is $3 (first-time walkers are free). A "B" award patch, a 3-color embroidered patch features the newly adopted St. Mary's Gateway District logo, which depicts the upper outline of St. Louis Hall, a signature building of St. Mary's University, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will be available for an additional $0.75. This event is listed on the American Volkssport Association (AVA) website.

Noncompetitive 10km/5km (6.2mi/3.1mi) walk. The route may be walked TWICE on the same Start Card for 20km distance credit. Walk, jog or run at your own pace. It is open to all and families are encouraged to participate. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Everyone participating MUST register and carry a Start Card and turn it in at the FINISH. This event normally will be held regardless of weather conditions.

The route is flat and winds through the St. Mary's University campus past historic landmarks and educational buildings. It meanders through the surrounding neighborhood on city streets to Woodlawn Lake Park. The walk is Rated #1A. 

Pets are welcome but they must be kept on leashes at all times. They are not allowed inside any university buildings. Please “pick up” after your pet.

Special Features: This walk qualifies for the following AVA Special Event Programs: America’s Baseball Walks; Fraternal Organizations; Walking the Old Spanish Trail; Special National Officers Book (S.N.O.B.); Walking the USA A-Z; and 50 State Walking Program. Also qualifies for the Randolph Roadrunners Special Event: "35 on 35" celebrating the AVA's 35th Anniversary.

Old Spanish Trail display: The Old Spanish Trail Association, with its director, Harral Ayres, was a group of community leaders from towns and cities across the entire southern stretch of the United States, from St. Augustine, Florida, through San Antonio, Texas, and west to San Diego, California.

The official archives of the Old Spanish Trail Association are held in Special Collections at the Louis J. Blume Library at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. A representative from OST100—an organization locating, revitalizing and preserving the roadway, businesses and historic sites of the original 1920s Old Spanish Trail—will have a display in the University Center atrium about the OST and will be available to answer questions.

The sponsoring organizations for the walk are the Neighborhood Revitalization Project-Quality of Life Taskforce, the Office of City of San Antonio District 7 Councilmember Cris Medina, and the LoneSt*r Walkers.
