Joe Ruiz has lived in Texas most of his life and couldn’t wait to get back to make an impact on the community that’s done so much for him. He returns to San Antonio after a year-long stint in Seattle, WA, as the lead news producer for seattletimes.com, where the staff shared in the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Coverage, among other awards for the team’s online work and more.
Prior to his time in Washington, he served as the news editor for KSAT.com and as a freelance writer for the San Antonio Express-News and Prime Time Newspapers. He attended Texas State University-San Marcos and is intent on completing his bachelor’s studies in the near future. He is also a co-founder of TheBMPR, a San Antonio-based open community with a focus on social media technology and its adaptation in various industries.
In a recent online survey, people called Ruiz, "a journalist, wordsmith, fantasy basketball champion and said he 'does not suffer fools lightly,'" is a "fierce defender of journalism," and "has a penchant for paperboy hats and fedoras." He hopes you’ll eventually agree. You can reach Joe via email , @JoeRuiz on Twitter or via his website.
In June 2011, Ruiz was elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
