On Friday, July 31st, Associate Judge Charles Montemayor of Bexar County’s Children Court, swore in over 30 new Court Appointed Special Advocates to become the voice of our city’s abused and neglected children. This training class began Tuesday, July 13th and carried on for a total of 33 hours covering subjects such as developing cultural competence, domestic violence and the effects on children, as well as how to effectively navigate an adversarial (or court) system. These new advocates will join the ranks of over 500 other advocates in effort to help Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) reach their goal of having an advocate assigned to every active child protective services case, by the year 2020. Currently, CASA is able to provide volunteers for only 60% of children entering State protective custody.
