Check out the brand new website of CI:Now, the collaborative that is a funder and co-founder of NOWCastSA.
CI:Now, short for Community Information Now, is a partnership of more than 25 public, private, governmental, educational and healthcare organizations working together to "democratize the data" since 1998.
CI:Now is made up of three coordinated arms, each of which extends into the community its unique contribution to CI:Now’s mission.
NOWData is CINow’s data arm. Its job is to demystify data and get it into the hands of people like you – people who are working to change our community for the better. NOWData is an online datacenter and data services provider administered by the University of Texas School of Public Health, San Antonio Regional Campus (UTSPH-SARC), and technically supported by the NOWData Working Group comprised of local data providers and data users.
NOWTech is a partnership with the City of San Antonio to ensure that our community moves to and stays at the forefront of the tech revolution. NOWTech is a network of community-based computer training centers housed in the literacy centers of the City’s Department of Community Initiatives. There, in both English and Spanish, instructors teach adults how to use computers and the internet to improve their lives and those of their families.
The third arm is NOWCastSA, an independent, online-only community news organization, dedicated to local, public service journalism and to creating a neighbor-to-neighbor news and information network in San Antonio.
CI:Now's new website includes directions on how to use NOWData, NOWCastSA and NOWTech to learn more about San Antonio. The page is a good starting point to see examples of how to Discover, Connect and Act with the information on each website.
In December 2008, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded an initial, two-year $488,500 challenge grant to create NOWCastSA, as part of a national five-year, $24 million Knight Community Information Challenge.
To meet that challenge, CI:Now and its partners committed funds and in-kind contributions valued at $438,500, and the San Antonio Area Foundation contributed $50,000.
In June 2010, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded a two-year $205,500 challenge grant to NOWCastSA, as part of the Knight Community Information Challenge.
To meet that challenge, CI:Now and its partners, including the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County and Methodist Healthcare Ministries, contributed $75,000 in matching funds in 2010 and $25,000 in 2011. The San Antonio Area Foundation contributed $50,000 toward that challenge grant in 2010 and contributed an additional $50,000 in November 2011.
