This week's Edge has news you can use on Property Taxes, School Finance, a webcast on Holocaust Remembrance and a special job opening at NOWCastSA.
If you saw a whopping increase in your property tax bill, you’re not alone - residential property taxes are going up all over the San Antonio area by nearly 8 percent.
San Antonio District 1 Councilman Roberto Treviño brought the Bexar Appraisal District's Chief Appraiser to San Antonio Central Library on May 16 to explain what’s up and what you can do about it.
NOWCastSA recorded the event so you can replay video of the presentation and also watch the question and answer session with the audience. The answers to your neighbor's questions might help you decide what to do about your tax bill.
We’ve also got a link to a handy San Antonio Express-News map showing the average residential property value increases in Bexar County by ZIP codes in 2015. Click here to get the story and the video.
The Texas Supreme Court recently ruled that the state’s Byzantine system of school finance is just barely constitutional.
In its 100-page ruling, the court said Texas school children deserve “transformational, top-to-bottom reforms that amount to more than Band-Aid on top of Band-Aid.”
But the justices said it was not their job to tell 181 members of the Texas Legislature what to do or how to fix it.
NOWCastSA talked to the men who filed suits to fix the system, St. Mary's University law professor Al Kauffman and IDRA's David Hinojosa. Click here to get the story and watch the conversation.
Join NOWCastSA for a live webcast on May 26 at 6 p.m. when Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger will discuss his book, "A German Life: Against All Odds, Change is Possible."
The story describes his struggle growing up in Germany in the shadow of his father, a highly-decorated WWII German tank commander and Nazi officer.
Dr. Wollschlaeger eventually converted to Judaism, emigrated to Israel and served in the Israel Defense Forces as a medical officer.
