The San Antonio Public Library, SAPL, has expanded its services with a new digital collection website experience just for children and teens. Through a partnership with OverDrive, Inc., Children and Teen eReading Rooms are now available at mysapl.org. The eReading rooms provide a virtual environment for children and teens to browse within the SAPL digital library. Each is customized to display content only for the particular browsing audience, either juvenile or young adult.
“We are very proud to be one of only five Library systems in the nation with two OverDrive eReading rooms,” said Ramiro Salazar, Library Director. “The San Antonio Public Library is committed to providing the best possible customer service to our community, and these younger, technology-conscious generations are a large segment of our patron population.”
All titles in the eReading rooms are also cataloged by reading level and other reading metrics to help parents and teachers select titles to aid in literacy campaigns. All titles can be sampled in OverDrive Read prior to borrowing or placing a hold. Browsing can be done by subject, reading level or interest level.
“The ability to customize the collections within the eReading rooms allows us to tailor the content to align with Library initiatives like the Summer Reading Program, Teen Tech Week, and monthly themes such as National Poetry Month and Women’s History Month,” explained Viki Ash, Coordinator of Children’s Services for the San Antonio Public Library. “Through these resources, we can also better support teachers and parents in accessing educational content digitally.”
The Children’s and Teen’s eReading Rooms screen the overall digital collection to just show Children’s and Young Adult content, which gets young patrons to the titles they want faster! This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for users with a library card. Digital titles are available anytime, anywhere and expire automatically, so no need to worry about late fees.
