Why support spare parts? Spare parts' efforts have gained national attention from New York to Hawaii. Spare parts has been featured in the local media and just recently was selected as the spotlighted organization to represent Texas in a National Reuse Documentary. Outreach expands to nearly all school districts in the San Antonio area. Spare parts networks with other reuse centers across the country. To further its mission, spare parts founder Mary Elizabeth Cantú is now a certified Master Reuser under the Reuse Alliance— the first person in San Antonio to earn this designation.
This past July, 100 teachers came to Wonderland of the Americas and brought wagons, dollies and carts to collect an abundance of materials for spare parts third annual free Fine Arts Fair and Arts Materials Giveaway. Spare parts’ idea of creative reuse is simple yet significant to the hundreds of teachers who benefitted from the giveaway and the thousands of students whose learning experiences are enhanced.
“This summer we exceeded our resources as a volunteer project and the time has come to transform spare parts into a full-time organization, serving our community year round through more environmentally-smart art making and creative reuse,” said Cantú.
