To celebrate the importance of higher education, San Antonio is hosting a College Signing Day at the AT&T Center, complete with a Spurs announcer, a red carpet and light show and a salute from Mayor Julian Castro.
Editor's Note: Did you miss College Signing Day? Did you attend and want to see yourself or your HS senior again? Watch the archive of our webcast here.
The event is for students to publicly declare their college choice similar to the way high school athletes announce their college choices on national signing day.
The event is the finale for College Week, which was organized by Castro, Generation TX, Cafe College and the San Antonio Education Partnership.
High school seniors who plan to attend college in the fall are invited to attend.
College Signing Day will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 21. NOWCastSA plans to livestream the event from the AT&T Center on the city's East Side.
The following College Week schedule is provided by GenTX from its website.
- On May 18th, the first “GenTxpert” council of 41 high school students and their counselors will take place from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Members of the council will become certified “GenTxperts” and will also participate in a focus group about college and the challenges to increasing enrollment and completion rates.
- That same evening the School Board Leaders Coalition will issue a resolution from all Bexar County school districts in support of a college-going and career-ready commmunity.
- On May 20, the community is asked to participate in College T-Shirt Day by wearing your favorite college T-shirt to work, school or play.
- On May 21, café college again plays host to a College Battle of the Bands from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Finally, on May 22, the San Antonio Spurs will host the first College Signing Day at the AT&T Center. Patterned after signing events involving star athletes, the event will spotlight graduating seniors who will announce their college plans for Fall 2011 in front of their families, community members and their peers.
