San Antonio’s First All-Boys Public School

The Young Men’s Leadership Academy will be San Antonio’s first all-boys public school when it opens in August 2015 and will represent SAISD’s expansion of this single-gender model of education. It is backed by research that indicates that boys and girls learn differently.

YMLA will help boys in grades 4-8 build the kind of strong internal foundation that is necessary for external success. Our belief is that every boy who enters our school, regardless of where he comes from, has great potential. We will help him achieve that potential by setting high expectations and emphasizing character, leadership and discipline. This single-gender environment allows boys the freedom to openly express themselves and the space needed to develop positive self-esteem and sense of self-identity.

There will be no cost to attend this SAISD in-district charter school, which will be open to students from across Bexar County and surrounding areas. We are accepting applications for 2015-2016 for boys entering grades 4, 5 and 6 through March 16, 2015.

A grade will be added each of the following two years. Starting in 2017-2018, YMLA will serve grades 4-8, a crucial bridge period between the early elementary grades and high school.

SAISD’s other single-gender campus is the exemplary Young Women’s Leadership Academy. That school opened in 2008 as the city’s only public all-girls school – it serves girls in grades 6-12 – and has been rated as one of the best in the state.
