According the the Center, Mending Gaps will catalyze constructive, public conversation about healthcare access, outcomes and disparities in San Antonio. The discussion will explore unfilled health care needs as well as root causes that contribute to inequalities and poor health (such as poverty, underinsurance, low health literacy, language, cultural factors and transportation).
Dr. Anil T. Mangla, Chief of Epidemiology at SA Metro Health, will review recent data from San Antonio and Bexar County documenting the five major disparities in health outcomes according to race, ethnicity, income, zip code or relevant demographic descriptors. Center Director Dr. Ruth Berggren and Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of University Health System Dr. Bryan Alsip will moderate a panel discussion on these issues. Members of the audience (both in the room and online) will have the opportunity to present questions to the panel.
The panelists include:
- Academia: Robert Ferrer, MD, MPH, Vice Chair for Research, Department of Family and Community Medicine, UT Health Science Center
- Non-Profit: Kevin C. Moriarty, President and CEO Methodist Healthcare Ministries
