The 2013 Boxer Boogie 3k and 5k races on Oct. 27 attracted 474 runners, many with their furry companions and costumes. The event rasied a total of $12,200 for the Alamo Boxer Rescue group.

The San Antonio Public Library hosted 2013 Texas Poet Laureate Rosemary Catacalos for a reading and reception on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013. Naomi Shihab Nye, regarded a wandering poet who calls San Antonio her home, introduced Catacalos by reading some of her own poetry. Then Catacalos read her work to the room packed full of admirers, including other poets, poetry enthusiasts, soul searchers and students. You can replay the entire event in this video:

Youth ages 6 to 16 are invited to sign up to play in the Parks and Recreation Department’s youth volleyball, soccer and basketball leagues. Registration begins on Tuesday, October 1 and will continue through Friday, October 25 at 15 participating community centers. “Organized sports have the power to boost a child’s self-esteem and create lifelong healthy habits, while also teaching them the value of teamwork,” says Program Manager Geronimo Aguirre.
