As Easter weekend nears, Animal Care Services reminds residents the sale of baby animals as holiday novelties is illegal in San Antonio. Under San Antonio ordinance, it is illegal for any person to sell or offer for sale, barter, lease, rent or give away baby chicks or ducklings or rabbits less than 8 weeks old as pets or novelties.

The San Antonio Public Library, SAPL, has expanded its services with a new digital collection website experience just for children and teens. Through a partnership with OverDrive, Inc., Children and Teen eReading Rooms are now available at mysapl.org. The eReading rooms provide a virtual environment for children and teens to browse within the SAPL digital library.

Fiesta San Antonio, the annual citywide celebration commemorating the history and culture of San Antonio, kicks off on April 10 and will welcome locals and visitors from all over who attend the annual event to enjoy the many festivities. Mayor Julián Castro and the City of San Antonio continue to encourage Fiesta-goers to think “green” by recycling, making healthier choices, and by enjoying parades designated as smoke-free areas.

Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved an order banning outdoor burning in unincorporated Bexar County. Fire Marshal Craig Roberts told the court the Keetch-Byram Drought Index, KBDI, is above 400 and there has been an increase in the number of grass fires.

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) opened its doors to the new Baby Café today. The site is a drop-in center for everything breastfeeding-related, from professional advice on infant feeding, to support groups to one-on-one counseling, all in a non-clinical, café-style environment designed to support breastfeeding.

February is African-American Heritage Month, a time to reflect on and celebrate African-American culture and heritage. The National Endowment for the Humanities’ Created Equal project uses the power of documentary films to encourage public conversations about the changing meanings of freedom and equality in America. Locally, the San Antonio Public Library, SAPL, aims to accomplish this through hosting a variety of events, film screenings and discussions throughout the month at various branch locations.

On Sunday, Sept. 15, the San Antonio Public Library and the San Antonio Public Library Foundation with the Latino Leadership For the Library Committee hosted a panel discussion, Palabras Con Poder or Words With Power, to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month. The panel of Hispanic authors and activitists talked about the influence of the Chicano movement and La Raza Unida party in their works and lives. Replay video of the event below.

Youth ages 6 to 16 are invited to sign up to play in the Parks and Recreation Department’s youth volleyball, soccer and basketball leagues. Registration begins on Tuesday, October 1 and will continue through Friday, October 25 at 15 participating community centers. “Organized sports have the power to boost a child’s self-esteem and create lifelong healthy habits, while also teaching them the value of teamwork,” says Program Manager Geronimo Aguirre.

On July, 29, San Antonio protesters met in Milam Park for a solidarity action protesting Arizona's controversial immigration bill, SB 1070. The demonstration was one of dozens of similar actions across the country. The march and rally is documented in this slideshow, through the photos taken by Pak Lai, a student at San Antonio College.
