On Friday, Dec. 9, NOWCastSA was invited to be a part of the holiday lighting party at Avenida Guadalupe by offering to work with people who wanted to know more about shooting photos and videos with their cell phones or digital cameras.Below are some of the photos from those who showed up to our table, as well as some photos from our staff. We helped about 10 people in a short span, allowing them to use our digital cameras and Flip video cameras to walk around and learn how do great work with easy equipment.

Under threatening skies and occassional rain, people from across San Antonio gathered along Guadalupe Street on the city's West side to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Mexican Independence Day was officially Friday, September 16, but the event was held September 17 so more people could attend.

Updated Sept. 2012: The Avenida Guadalupe neighborhood is gearing up for the annual Diez y Seis parade and festival to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. The event is a tradition rich in culture and family fun.

With about 50 people quietly munching on a surprisingly healthy breakfast, one of San Antonio’s representatives in Washington, D.C., said the onus for a healthier community was on the neighborhoods first.U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez, the representative for Texas’ 20th district, gave a brief update on health issues in front of legislators and focused on increasing the health of the community by asking those in attendance to take more responsibility.

Avenida Guadalupe Association (Avenida) President/CEO J. Oscar Ramirez has been selected to speak on July 25 on a panel at the upcoming National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Annual Conference in Washington, DC where President Barack Obama will offer a keynote address. Mr. Ramirez currently acts as one of two Texas Affiliate Council members, and the panel discussion next week will cover the affiliates’ role in expanding Latino engagement and participation in the 2012 elections.

The Avenida Guadalupe Association (Avenida) launched three free access computer centers on May 17 located at the Guadalupe Street Coffeehouse at 1320 Guadalupe Street, the Margarita Huantes Learning Center at 1411 Guadalupe Street and the Parian Business Center at 1410 Guadalupe Street.
