Join the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library as they honor three of San Antonio's most outstanding artists: Latino jazz musician Henry Brun, currently working on an Afro-Caribbean project, scheduled to debut at the Carver Cultural Center in 2018. Brun has performed in Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, as well as across the U.S. He has served as chair of the City of San Antonio Cultural Advisory Board.

Join the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library as they celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Arts & Letters awards by honoring Latino jazz musician Henry Brun, sculptor and light artist Bill FitzGibbons, and mixed-media artist Laurel Gibson! Each year since 1972, the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library have presented the Arts & Letters awards to “recognize and celebrate achievement by individuals who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in the arts and letters.”

Since 2004, the San Antonio Botanical Garden (SABG) has annually installed sculptural works in their beautiful setting in the Mahnke Park area. SABG Executive Director Bob Brackman has worked with Bill FitzGibbons and a variety of nonprofit arts organizations over the years, such as Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum and the Texas Sculpture Group.

Updated: What is "puro" in San Antonio? In a Feb. 21 event at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex, 11 San Antonians offered their thoughts on what makes something or someone purely San Antonio. The consensus? It depends on one's viewpoint, the speakers and audience members said. The definition could range from music or color to food or sense of place. Or all of the above.

Second Saturday is a great occasion to catch up with friends and acquaintances, listen to multiple DJs spin tunes, grab some munchies from a food truck, have a beverage and above all, check out the art. As a recent visitor to San Antonio put it, “We don’t have anything like this in Austin. This event is so great because it’s primarily about the art.”

This coming Second Saturday, Jan. 14 from 7 p.m. till 10 p.m., Dock Space Gallery will be showcasing Rodolfo Choperena’s “Interventions of Light”, a phantasmagorical photography exhibit inspired by Carl Sagan.

John Webb at Dock Space Gallery John Webb is a practicing architect, professor in UTSA’s architecture program, an artist with an MFA from UTSA (emphasis on sculpture), and a master craftsman employing all his training to create exquisite, masterfully crafted sculpture using bodily and mechanical forms as well as ingenious furniture art whose aesthetics please and intrigue the eye.

This Second Saturday on Sept. 10, at Dock Space Gallery, an artist run space, Luis M. Garza will be showcasing his landscape photography in an aptly named show called “Unrivaled: The land will remain after the last of us.”
