U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) visited the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio to talk to students about the importance of relations between the United States and Japan. Castro, founding co-chair of the House U.S.-Japan Caucus and member of the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committees, talked about Japan not only as an economic superpower, but also as a valuable trade partner. The March 31 event was sponsored by the UTSA East Asia Institute.

St. Mary’s University, the first  institution of higher education in Texas to achieve Fair Trade University status, will celebrate with Fair Trade Day April 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The campus community is invited for free fair trade coffee, mugs and chocolate on the patio outside the Blume Library.

The new Trade and Investment Strategy is the culmination of two years of research and analysis by San Antonio as part of the Brookings Institution’s Global Cities Initiative (GCI). The GCI is a five-year partnership between Brookings and JPMorgan Chase to assist leaders in U.S. metropolitan areas reorient and strengthen their regional economies toward greater engagement and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
