After her mother, father, husband and three sisters were killed during tense fighting between quarrelling neighbors, Sudan and Chad, Josephine Toundamje and her seven children fled Chad into Cameroon. They were resettled in San Antonio in 2010. Shahram Ebadfardezadeh, 50, his wife and four children left Iran five years ago for San Antonio, where they could enjoy religious freedom and practice the baptismal customs of their Mandaean community, who follow the teachings of John the Baptist.

Exciting Update: We got more than 16 cameras on the Roosevelt High School Roughriders Drumline at the Rock-It Into the Future Science Festival at Rackspace Hosting on April 6, including four (count 'em!) Christmas came early for the San Antonio Eastside Promise Neighborhood project: The collaboration, led by the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, won a $24.6 million grant to from the federal government to provide "cradle to career" services to improve educational achievement.Mayor Julian Castro announced the grant at a news conference on Dec. 19."What this means is that education on the East Side will never be the same," Castro said.
