Author Susan Bernardo and illustrator Courtenay Fletcher performed readings of their books, “Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs” and “The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm,” and gave an in-depth lecture about bibliotherapy and creativity and how to guide children to develop emotional intelligence. The virtual workshop, webcast to more than 1,150 child care professionals, was sponsored by Voices for Children of San Antonio and ChildCareGroup of Dallas.

On the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Emma Faye Rudkin says she’s being forced to start all over again in standing up for her rights. When face masks became required attire for the pandemic, communication was disrupted for those with hearing loss who depend on reading lips, said Rudkin, 20, who is deaf and is the founder of the non-profit organization, Aid the Silent.

Midway through a news conference where executives were describing hospitals' herculean efforts to cope with a staggering increase in COVID-19 cases in San Antonio and Bexar County, the governor of Texas dropped a proclamation. Gov. Greg Abbott ordered Texans in most counties to wear face coverings in public and gave mayors and county judges the ability to impose restrictions on outdoor gatherings of more than 10 people. It was what local leaders had been imploring him to do for weeks, as COVID-19 cases spiraled out of control in Texas' urban areas.

Melida Villegas Hutton was born on July 20, 1935, in Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila, Mexico, one of five siblings. She moved to the United States, where in the 1970s she became a citizen, and raised three daughters as a single mother. She was lost to the COVID-19 virus on June 15, 2020.

As San Antonio stepped up its battle against COVID-19 by banning gatherings of more than 10 people in city parks or plazas, Mayor Ron Nirenberg said weekend #BlackLivesMatter protesters would be "kindly asked to think about the pandemic we're in, and disperse." The remarks by Nirenberg, who has repeatedly encouraged #BlackLivesMatters protestors to demonstrate and speak out, came during the evening briefing on the virus which threatens to overwhelm the city's hospital capacity.

Because of the exponential increase in the number of new coronavirus cases, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has signed an emergency order prohibiting outdoor gatherings of 100 or more people to contain the spread of COVID-19.   “The virus has gained a foothold in our community as the state continues to open," Nirenberg said. “We need to act aggressively to regain control and slow its spread with every tool available."  

Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday took his most drastic action yet to respond to the post-reopening coronavirus surge in Texas, shutting bars back down and scaling back restaurant capacity to 50%. He also shut down river-rafting trips and banned outdoor gatherings of over 100 people unless local officials approve.

As COVID-19 hospitalizations skyrocketed again in Bexar County, a top medical official said the area is on a "worst cast scenario" trajectory that could overwhelm hospital capacity within weeks. "This car is going at full speed headed toward a brick wall," said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg during the nightly media briefing. "We all have a role to play. We'll all feel the impact if we hit it." The situation is "a little scary," said Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. "If we do nothing, by mid-August we could have 1,900 people" hospitalized.
