On Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m, Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will host its annual kickoff press conference and resource fair to formally launch the city’s free tax preparation service. VITA Volunteer Tax Preparers will be on site to help citizens making up to $60,000 annually file their income taxes free of charge. Showing their support, Chair of the United Way Strengthening Families Issue Council Bill Gold, Councilwoman District 3 Rebecca Viagran, and State Representative Mike Villarreal will attend the kickoff.

  While San Antonio continues to become a high tech city, broadband Internet access in the city doesn’t compare to other technology hub cities across the nation. In some areas of the city, service to residents is only slightly better than high-end dial-up access.

REPLAY THE VIDEO: NOWCastSA webcast San Antonio's first-ever Midnight Basketball League Championship game from the Davis-Scott Family YMCA. The Davis-Scott YMCA team won the Championship by a score of 82 to 65 over the Second Baptist Church team.

With help from a grant from U.S. Department of Education, San Antonio school, city and and community leaders joined with residents to create the East Side Promise Neighborhood initiative to collaborate on a plan to expand the opportunities for children to succeed in getting an education from cradle to career. This video is the second in a series to collect the participants' expectations, desires and ideas about how the East Side Promise Neighborhood Initiative will function.
