By Edmond Ortiz San Antonians will be speaking up and representing their communities on key issues from March 9 to March 18 at the 2018 South by Southwest, the annual Austin festival that celebrates convergence of technology, music and cinema. Individuals from San Antonio nonprofits, businesses and academia are scheduled to talk about topics including diversity, health care, community organization, empowering women, minority communities, aging and entrepreneurship.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg talked with Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, President and CEO of San Antonio Economic Development Foundation during the Oct. 18 #AskRon, which streamed live from Geekdom. The two talked about the history of the Rand building, Rosella coffee and creating tech jobs in San Antonio including why San Antonio will not be pursuing the Amazon headquarters.

Editor's Note: This story has been updated throughout.  There will be more than San Antonian taquerias, musicians and filmmakers demonstrating their talent at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. Several local representatives from the high technology, culinary arts and educational sectors will gather in Austin to discuss how San Antonio has now become known more than a tourist town. The annual convergence of interactive technology, music and cinema begins March 10.

Two job fairs are taking place within a week, one focusing on San Antonio's growing information technology sector. Workforce Solutions Alamo will have a career fair for youths 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Education Service Center Region 20. Organizations say there are positions available in an increasing number of specific fields. The job fairs are happening after the announcement that U.S. jobless claims fell last week to their lowest level since July.

Google Fiber’s vow to install 4,000 miles of gigabit fiber optic cable in San Antonio over the next two years means those who can already afford broadband Internet will be able to purchase it at blazingly faster speeds. A typical home or small business connection could go from 10 Megabits per second to as much as 1,000 Megabits per second.
