San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro and most of City Council stood with hundreds of members of local nonprofit organizations on the steps of City Hall to announce the kickoff of the the Big Give S.A. Scott McAninch, of the San Antonio Nonprofit Council, announced the receipt of major matching funds and prizes that will help 467 local nonprofits raise $1 million for their causes.

With mere days left until Christmas, some local nonprofits are grappling with less donations during their biggest push of the year. The local Salvation Army has collected $12,000 less than what it had by this time last year for Angel Tree donations and the Red Kettle campaign is on track to fall short $20,000 compared to last year, said Danny Hermosillo, Salvation Army San Antonio Area Command Business Administrator.

The Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner has been mixed in San Antonio’s tradition since 1979 when the late Raul Jimenez fed 100 of San Antonio’s elderly and less fortunate. This year, 4,000 volunteers are expected to serve more than 25,000 who gather for the fellowship and the food, said event organizer Patricia Jimenez.
