In a victory for the Hays Street Bridge Restoration Group and its recently deceased founder, Doug Steadman, the Historic and Design Review Commission on March 9 rejected a developer’s proposal to erect a 72-foot-tall apartment building next to the 58-foot-tall Hays Street Bridge. The first public meeting of Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s housing task force was different. On Tuesday Oct. 3, all of the housing questions that audience members lobbed toward the five-member task force landed. None were off limits. Esperanza Center for Peace and Justice is marking its 30th anniversary throughout 2017. But for individuals who have long been associated with the nonprofit, such as director Graciela Sanchez, Esperanza is not standing idly by, celebrating with a few special events. Sanchez. other staff members, volunteers and supporters of the Esperanza have plenty to do, addressing a variety of local and global issues, like they always have.

NEW ORLEANS -- Traveling by bus from San Antonio to New Orleans isn't easy if you 're in a wheelchair. But that was the price Lorinda Carr was willing to pay recently in support of an ongoing court fight to force San Antonio to quit letting groups it endorses parade for free while billing all others for traffic control and cleanup.
