A city commission is scheduled to pass judgement today on a developer’s proposal to erect a 74-foot-tall apartment building next to the 58-foot-high Hays Street Bridge, one of the most recognized landmarks in San Antonio, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and designated a Texas Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The apartment building would block the view of the iconic bridge, and would be built on land donated by the Dawson family in 2005 to be a public park.

The San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation is gathering public input to consider additional local landmarks for "viewshed protection," to keep the view from being blocked by development at the request of District 7 Councilwoman Ana E. Sandoval and District 2 Councilman William “Cruz” Shaw.
