San Antonio is one of the top college destinations in Texas with more than 150,000 students enrolled in a variety of colleges and universities. Between April 27 and May 4, Destination College celebrates San Antonio as both a college town and a college going town with free events each day.

At 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 3, at the Central Library, Mayor Julián Castro will join San Antonio ISD Superintendent Dr. Robert Durón, Rotary International representative Jim Montgomery, and Library officials for the official kick-off of the 2011 San Antonio Public Library Summer Reading Program.Although this is the second year the Mayor has sponsored Library Summer Reading, this year the program is also an SA2020 initiative. SA2020 is a community-wide effort, begun by Mayor Castro in 2010, to chart San Antonio’s course for the next decade.

Replay the video: San Antonio celebrated its college-bound high school seniors as rock stars during College Signing Day, complete with a red carpet, a light show, a Spurs announcer, bands and a salute from Mayor Julian Castro. The event, held center court at the AT&T Center, was for students to publicly declare their college choice similar to the way high school athletes announce their college choices on National Signing Day. Hundreds of high school seniors who plan to attend college in the fall registered to attend, according to event organizers.

After months of public forums, surveys and input from people who care about San Antonio, a draft report of the SA 2020 plan was released Sunday morning by the Jacksonville Community Council Inc.

 Saying downtown is the first impression of San Antonio, Mayor Julian Castro and City Council members went on a digging spree along Alamo Street and planted the first of 1,000 Chinquapin oaks that are resistant to the familiar droughts of South Texas.

With help from both members from Texas, the Senate voted Saturday to block the DREAM Act, which would provide a route to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as children.Only 55 of the needed 60 Senators voted to stop debate on the bill and bring it to the floor for a vote. Texas' Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn were among the 41 who voted against moving forward with the DREAM Act.
