Several years ago, my neighborhood association and each one of its members personally were threatened by a local powerful developer with a lawsuit. We were told that not only would we be sued as an association but each one personally would be “tied up for life” in an expensive legal battle. He said he had lawyers on retainer, so it did not matter to him how long he could drag it out.

Nearly 50 residents gathered to remove and replace the Government Hill Alliance Board of Directors in a meeting at St. Patrick's Catholic Church that was carefully scripted and orderly. Organizers said they were motivated by concern over development in the historic neighborhood and a lack of transparency by the previous board. In a victory for the Hays Street Bridge Restoration Group and its recently deceased founder, Doug Steadman, the Historic and Design Review Commission on March 9 rejected a developer’s proposal to erect a 72-foot-tall apartment building next to the 58-foot-tall Hays Street Bridge. When Beacon Hill Area Neighborhood Association filed a routine appeal of the city’s zoning for a Stripes convenience store and gas station at Fredericksburg Road and Woodlawn Avenue, the developer's response shocked them. Association members said the developer, GFR Development Services, sent emails threatening to file a lawsuit against them unless they dropped the appeal.
