Historically, San Antonio has always been the cultural, economic, military and religious hub of Texas. In the late 1700s, San Antonio became the capital of Texas and the most significant city in the realm of Nueva EspaƱa. Early on, the capital had been in Los Adaes, in far East Texas, but was replaced and its soldiers and citizens were moved to San Antonio upon its closing.
