Join Andrea Vocab Sanderson as she celebrates her birthday with a purpose filled night of Jazz & Poetry with a Purpose. The theme for the night is "35 Years in the Making." This will be the closing poetry event of 2016 so don't miss the opportunity to share in this special night. Poetry will be performances by Anthony M. Flores, Anthony Gordon, Sidally Somupuson, Rooster Martinez, Aminah Decé, Dat Mayne DeeWayne, and Lee Coffee III. Music will be provided by the Rene Saenz Jazz trio. There is a $5 cover. Carmens De La Calle Café offers delicious food and tantalizing drinks.

********CALLING ALL YOUTH POETS!!!!********* The Fresh Ink Youth Slam season is upon us. On January 11, 2 p.m. at Deco Pizzeria, Fresh Ink returns! We're back hosting regular poetry slams for youth. Poets will be competing for prizes, points and earning ranking towards our final slam that will determine a team going to Brave New Voices in Atlanta, GA. What is a Poetry Slam? A poetry slam is a competition invented in Chicago by Marc Kelly Smith (so WHAT?), where poets read original work to be judged by a randomly selected audience.

HOT! SA Artists Respond to Climate Change opens July 25, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Bihl Haus Arts, 2803 Fredericksburg Road (inside the gates of Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments and across from the Tip Top Café). The exhibit runs through September 12, 2014, and the gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 1-4 p.m. or by appointment, call (210)383-9723. WHO: Curators Raul Castellanos (art) and Mobi Warren (poetry) and more than 50 featured artists, poets, musicians and environmental experts.

Celebrating National Poetry Month, SAY Sí's ALAS Youth Theatre Company will host an evening of poetry and spoken-word for youth under 21. This event will showcase featured performances with open-mic slots throughout the night. Opening Reception with Optional Writing Workshop: 6 - 7 p.m. Featured Performances with Open-Mic: 7 - 9 p.m.

The 6th Annual On and Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour continues its celebration of the arts with two very special March events at Bihl Haus Arts. First, Fred Sings, at Bihl Haus Arts on Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m., is a poolside (in case of rain, an alternate lcoation will be announced) concert by three of San Antonio’s most important women jazz composers and performers: Bett Butler, Katchie Cartwright and Carol Cisneros. This event, organized by Beverly Prado, also commemorates Women’s History Month.
