Eva’s Heroes recently received a $33,000 award and 10 laptops from the Microsoft Community Empowerment Fund to support the organization’s Volunteer Mentor Training Program. The award will be used to train teen volunteers to develop a video training series, including sensitivity and safety components, to introduce potential volunteers to individuals with intellectual special needs and prepare them for behaviors and situations they might experience.

Eva’s Heroes is encouraging brothers and sisters, who are 18 and older and who have a sibling with special needs, to register now for the organization’s free SA Sibs program that begins Aug. 19 with a meet-and-greet at Paramour. SA Sibs offers monthly sessions that include discussion activities, social outings, games and opportunities to make new friends. The Down Syndrome Association of South Texas (DSASTX) has finalized its name change and added new staff in an effort to reach more individuals and families and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

Morgan’s Wonderland will host an indoor soccer clinic for children with special needs ages 6 to 15 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 26 at the Event Center at Morgan’s Wonderland, 5223 David Edwards Drive (at the intersection of Wurzbach Parkway and Thousand Oaks Drive just off IH 35 in Northeast San Antonio).

The first Wonderland Ball will be held May 12, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sponsered by The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, the event caters toward special needs individuals ages 16 and older with more then 200 individuals set to attend.
