Many people were confused when barricades went up near the St. Mary’s Strip from March 31 through April 3. The move to put a protective barrier around the nearby neighborhood came after residents complained about violence and vandalism by bar customers who trashed their properties.

Two 100-year-old storied homes in San Antonio’s Tobin Hill neighborhood are being demolished after a city councilman invoked an ordinance under the city signage code to block landmark protection sought by the community and the city Office of Historic Preservation. The clash between the community, the developer and the city bureaucracy erupted at the July 17 Historic Design and Review Commission (HDRC) meeting, prompting the panel to initiate a survey of the remaining historic and significant buildings in Tobin Hill.

Representatives of 22 neighborhoods gathered at the April 14 Tier One Neighborhood Coalition meeting to prepare to get involved and speak up as San Antonio rewrites community plans under the SA Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan. Under SA Tomorrow, the city discarded long-standing neighborhood plans that were years in the making. To protect the neighborhoods' future, representatives are gearing up to participate in the planning process.

Updated: After hearing testimony from 26 residents, the San Antonio Zoning Commission voted 6-1 on May 17 to deny a request by Tobin Hill North neighbors to be designated a Historic District. The move also rejected the recommendation by city staff that the panel approve the historic designation or grant a continuance.

Update: The matter was rejected by the San Antonio Zoning Commission on May 17. Click here for story and video. The issue now moves to San Antonio City Council. On April 4, more than 50 residents from Tobin Hill and other nearby neighborhoods met with city officials and their councilman for a spirited conversation about whether 88 properties should be covered by Historic Designation.
