San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro kicked off the San Antonio Public Library's 2012 Summer Reading Program for children and teens, promising a book and a signed certificate for each person who finishes the program. "In the 21st Century global economy, there's nothing more important than acquiring the learning, the brainpower the knowledge that you need to succeed," Castro said. Updated Sept. 5, 2013: San Antonio Food Bank and Whataburger launched the 4rd annual SA Goes Orange, a month-long campaign designed to encourage everyone in southwest Texas to "Go Orange" and take action to fight hunger during September, Hunger Action Month. According to a press release, more than 230,000 people in Southwest Texas rely on the Food Bank’s network of programs and services— and more than 500,000 Southwest Texans are at risk of going hungry.
