Join the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center and the Hays St. Bridge Community Coalition for the Cherry & Lamar Block Party!
We will be showcasing over 40 photos from the Corner of Cherry and Lamar Photo Contest and revealing the grand prize winner! Photographs taken by students in the Martinez Street Women’s Center Girls Zone Summer Camp -- who took a workshop with local photographer Kristel Puente on August 1, 2018 -- will also be shown.
Live performances include: Alyson Alonzo, Lonely Horse, Son Queers, Natasha Hernandez (poetry), Sulema Mendoza (poetry), and Agosto Cuellar (DJ Jive). Food donated by La Botanica will be available, as well as food pop-ups by Sunshine Bakery, Monarch Empanadas, and Mama Tierra.
St. Sucia Zine, San Anto Zine Fest, MOVE Texas, Martinez Street Women's Center, Southwest Workers Union, Ella Austin Community Center, Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, and more community groups will be tabling! There will also be screen printing station and Hays St. Bridge station where community members can learn about the issues surrounding the Bridge and the land on 803 N. Cherry St. The block party will also have the ROLL Models SATX bike crew, and the Push Rods Car Club in attendance with their classic cars on display that community members are welcome to take photos with and view.
As the Hays St. Bridge Community Coalition continues to advocate for the beautiful view of the Hays Street Bridge, the community faces the threat of a 5 story luxury apartment complex not only blocking this view, but entirely privatizing this space. If developers build “The Bridge Apartments” we will lose one of the most iconic views in San Antonio, and we refuse to allow that.
Celebrate our community and this public space with art, food, local vendors, spoken word, music y más!
