It is with great honor that The Urban-15 Group announces that its’ first ever winner of this years’ Gregg Barrios “Precious Words” Prize is none other than the world-renowned poet, writer, and Tejana; Amalia Ortiz. Amalia is a woman of many achievements. She is a published author, playwright, and activist whose poetry book, “Rant. Chant. Chisme.” was handpicked by NBC News’ “10 Great Latino Books in 2015.” Congratulations are in order for Amalia!
During April, The Urban-15 Group honored National Poetry Month with its’ fan favorite annual poetry phenomena; Mega Corazón. Eighteen of some of the most prestigious local poets from around San Antonio partook in Mega Corazón, which ran all April long. Though this was Urban-15's 7th annual Mega Corazón, playwright and Chicano activist, Gregg Barrios gifted an amazing cash prize award that would go to one lucky poet and the end of the event. Fans from across the world voted for their favorite poet this year, and Amalia Ortiz is this years’ recipient.
Congratulations to all 18 poets for sharing their gift with the world and to everyone who voted. Amalia will be honored at a special awards ceremony which will take place online on May 15 and 16 beginning at 7 p.m. on both evenings. All are invited to witness this well-deserved accomplishment.
