WestCare Texas is partnering with BEAT AIDS, San Antonio Fighting Back, and Texas Black Women's Health Initiative have teamed up to provide free HIV testing and resources at a local awareness event Know Your Status Caravan! taking place Saturday, February 6, 2021 in observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Know Your Status Caravan! participants will meet up starting at 1:00p.m. at Newly Empowered Women, 618 Hudson St., and depart at 1:45p.m. The Caravan will arrive back at Newly Empowered Women at approximately 3:15p.m. where free HIV Testing will commence until 4:00pm. The first 20 people tested will receive a $20 gift card. Free resource bags will be given to all Caravan Participants.
“The number of people newly diagnosed with HIV has increased by more than 50% in the last decade. With Bexar County in the top five across the state for HIV and AIDS diagnoses, we are
fighting for prevention and encouraging everybody to Know Their Status,” said Dr. Leonetta Green, HIV Lead Navigator at WestCare.
The National HIV Awareness theme is "We're in this together." Participants are encouraged to decorate their vehicles before they arrive with red ribbons and hashtags such as #KnowYourStatus, #WereInThisTogether, #EndtheStigma and #BlackHIVAwarenessDay for the caravan. The person with the most spirited vehicle wins a surprise gift.
