The Friends of the San Antonio Public Library are now accepting nominations for their annual Arts & Letters awards, recognizing Bexar County residents who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of the arts and literature, including the visual arts, dramatic arts, musical arts, and any genre of the written arts, including journalism. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, August 1, and nominations may be submitted online by clicking here or by mail to Arts & Letters Awards, P.O. Box 461523, San Antonio, Texas 78246. Nominees must have a significant body of work demonstrating continued excellence in their specific genres and continued commitment to the arts in San Antonio, and must have demonstrated a commitment to the greater Bexar County community. Anyone may make a nomination.
The Friends of the Library Arts & Letters Awards were first presented in 1972 to “recognize and celebrate achievement by individuals who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in the arts and letters.” The list of nearly 100 past honorees includes “artists, writers, musicians, educators, community leaders, and entertainers whose dedication and devotion to their chosen fields have served to enrich the cultural and spiritual life of San Antonio.” Past recipients have included Janette Sebring Lowery (author of children’s classic The Poky Little Puppy), architect O’Neil Ford, actor Tommy Lee Jones, dancer/teacher Rosita Fernández, Lyn Belisle, Gini García, Jacques Barzun, Sandra Cisneros, Rick Riordan, Jay Brandon, and Naomi Shihab Nye. In 2018, the honorees were authors Jan Jarboe Russell and John Phillip Santos, poet Laurie Anne Guerrero, and artist Clifton Tinker.
The 2019 Arts & Letters Awards recipients will be honored at a ceremony at the Central Library, 600 Soledad, San Antonio, Texas 78205, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 3.
