Book lovers will be glad to hear that the BookCellar Used Book Store, operated by the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library to benefit the library, is reopening at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1. The store, located in the basement of the Central Library, 600 Soledad, San Antonio, Texas 78205, has been closed for 18 months after being shut down by COVID-19 in March 2020.
Operating hours will be weekly on Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The BookCellar has long been a favorite of those who love to browse. In addition to a wide selection of print books for adults, teens and children, the store also offers DVDs, books on CD, music CDs, magazines, vinyl albums and vintage books.
John Costello, president of the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library, said, “We are thrilled and happy to be back in operation at the BookCellar. This is a key component in our efforts to raise funds to support the library. Everyone is invited to come out and shop.”

About the BookCellar
The BookCellar marked its 30th anniversary in 2021, having opened in May 1991 in the basement of the former Central Library, later the Hertzberg Circus Museum and now the Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market Street, San Antonio, Texas 78205. In 1998 it followed the Central Library to its present location on Soledad Street. The BookCellar, under the management of the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library, is operated almost entirely by volunteers. Since its opening, more than 450 volunteers have greeted customers, and the Friends of the Library have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support San Antonio Public Library programs and services. About the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library
The non-profit Friends of the San Antonio Public Library were organized in 1964 to promote use of the San Antonio Public Library and appreciation of its value as a cultural and educational asset to the community, and to encourage the extension and improvement of its services. Through their used book store, the BookCellar, located in the basement of the Central Library, and through fundraisers like branch library book sales, the Friends of the Library support activities such as the Summer Reading Program, the annual San Antonio Book Festival presented by the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, and library staff recognition and training.
