Southwest Workers Union kicked off its Roots of Change community garden, Jan. 23, at the groups' headquarters, 1416 E. Commerce St.

Forty volunteers from St. Mary's University and Central Catholic High School came out to till the soil, pull weeds and sow seeds. Even a family who had learned of the event on Twitter stopped by to pitch in.

The crew pulled weeds and used them to start a compost pile.

Diana Lopez, Environmental Justice Organizer for the SWU, even repurposed the grubs, giving them to a volunteer to bring home to feed to their chickens.
