Community journalism tool: Make Your Own DIY BikeCam

Publication Status

What better way to mix exercise with pleasure than by pairing bike riding with a little recorded visual tour?

Now, I can’t take credit for coming up with the DIY BikeCam. I stumbled upon the idea when I purchased the book “Photojojo!: Insanely Great Photo Projects and DIY Ideas” and its companion website, Photojojo.

Photojojo features a relatively easy way to create a BikeCam for under $10. I went the extra frugal route and decided to find a few metal scraps, a screw and a nut in my dad’s tool room to create a seriously unique creation.

Viola! My version of the Photojojo-inspired BikeCam.

This is an ideal tool for community journalists. Just be sure to keep your camera or recorder on-hand at all times. Snap a few pictures, or even record a few frames while riding around, for example, the First Friday Art Walk.

Also, be sure to keep visiting the for a bike tour of San Antonio's Lavaca neighborhood.
